MASATOSHI-KAWATA

This is KAWATA

He dropped out of high school and, at the age of 18, chose the path of HIPHOP. 22 He had a strong passion for writing lyrics and dedicated himself to it every day. During weekends, he frequently performed at local clubs, declaring HIPHOP as his form of art. He even designed his own CD covers, emphasizing a unique artistic style. His journey into serious painting began just after turning 20, triggered by his first arrest for violating drug laws. Starting his art in the confines of a detention center became a pivotal moment. After his release, he worked as a painter. This post-arrest painting became the foundation for his continuous 23-year artistic journey.Initially, a hobbyist painter, he gained recognition when he embraced the trend of Instagram. As he consistently shared his artwork, followers gradually increased, attracting requests from artists worldwide. Notably, he had exchanges and design requests from Virgil Abloh, the designer of Off-White, as confirmed on his Instagram. Recognition also came from global stars and artists like Steven Aoki and Timmy Trumpet. As he became known globally, he quit painting to focus solely on his art. However, tragedy struck just as the world began acknowledging his talents. He, who loved alcohol, started consuming it heavily after leaving his painting job. Most likely, many of Masato Shikawatano's works were created during these moments of inebriation.Even as he faced his illness, he continued to pursue what he loved. His local friends are now spreading his artworks from New York to the world. They hope to share the testament of his life with people worldwide. May his artistic legacy, crafted through a life lived to the fullest, reach hearts around the globe.
